A recent issue of Perspectives includes a 10-page checklist that guides hospitals on reopening after a closure.
Reopening After Closure
This information is very pertinent to the small subset of hospitals that have closed due to some disaster. For example, a hurricane like Michael that caused flooding and closures throughout the Atlantic states.
The checklist provides a lengthy listing of considerations including both clinical and environmental issues. It’s important to evaluate these issues before reopening and beginning patient care again. This list may seem somewhat immaterial to organizations that have never experienced a closure. But, it is particularly valuable to organizations that have.
We advise you to share it with your emergency management team. And, keep it on file for post disaster recovery planning if that occurs in your hospital.
