Electrical backup. That’s the guideline for essential medication refrigerator standards under EC.02.05.03. It requires you to establish and implement a policy for emergency electrical backup.
This includes essential medication refrigerators and automated dispensing cabinets (ADC). But not every refrigerator or ADC needs emergency power connection. Of course, you do need enough to enable proper medication storage and accessibility.
Essential Medication Refrigerator Standards
To ensure you meet essential medication refrigerator standards, review existing devices. Determine if they connect to emergency power. Is the number adequate to accommodate a power outage?
Also, you will need to develop two policies. One to cover refrigerator standards and another for ADC’s, since both elements of performance include a D for documentation.
Here’s an added bonus so you look like you are on top of things. Change, your 2018 Environment of Care Utilities plan. Include a sentence or two about this process!
