Question:
What is a procedure vs. an operation? For example, is deep brain stimulation a procedure or an operation?
Our diagnostics side wants to bring a deep brain stimulation procedure into the MRI environment. We are divided on the topic. Is it acceptable to have this procedure in the procedure room vs operative room?
Are there any resources that clearly point to what is considered a procedure to be done in an OR vs. a procedural environment or a clear definition of an invasive procedure?
Answer:
The information is very subjective with respect to what is “invasive” and which invasive procedures need to be done in an OR vs a procedure setting. We have two pieces of advice.
- The decision to do the procedure in the OR vs a procedure room hinges on whether there is a fair chance that the minimally invasive procedure will convert to an open surgery instead. For procedures that can convert to an open case the procedure should be done in the OR.
- For tricky or new procedures such as this do find professional association guidelines or research articles that show you what the industry identifies as best practice or evidence-based guidelines (if they exist). Adhering to professional literature gives credibility to whatever decision you make and reduces risk on a new procedure such as this.
