When administering medication, is the nursing staff required to monitor the patients’ response to a first dose of a new medication?
Does the First Dose of a New Medication Require Monitoring?
There was a medication management standard in the past in the administration section that called for nursing staff to monitor the patient’s response to a first dose of a new medication. That specific requirement has been gone for quite some time now.
RC.02.01.01 includes a general requirement for the medical record to include “the patient’s response to care, treatment, and services” which would include any and all medications administered. There still is a requirement to educate patients about new medications, but no formal program to monitor new medications is required.
