Naming newborns. A new standard that you must implement by January 1, 2019.
NPSG.01.01.01, EP 3 standardizes the process of naming newborns for those who do not yet have a name determined by their parents.
TJC provides an example of an acceptable naming convention. “Smith, Judy Girl” uses the mothers name and sex of the child. Or in the case of multiple births, you would use “Smith, Judy Girl A, and Smith, Judy Girl B.”
In addition, TJC includes a note requiring a “name alert.” This is a visual warning to staff if there are multiple newborns who may have the same or similar names. Further, there is an R3 Report published in June 27 on this same issue. But, the report does not shed any additional light on the requirement over and above the Perspectives article.
