Medical Staff Tracer Tools

In previous posts we have discussed activities at a TJC Consultant Forum. This same group combined with several other advisory groups for a teleconference in October. And medical staff tracer tools, developed for conducting the system tracer, was one of the key topics.

New Medical Staff Tracer Tools

Without a doubt, the new medical staff tracer tools provide structure for many areas including:

• The discussion of credentialing and privileging
• OPPE and FPPE
• Medical staff bylaws review
• Graduate medical education

Further there is a checklist for the file review itself.

In fact, TJC moved away from such checklists in recent years. Yet they do create a standardized approach that many organizations like because they now know exactly what to expect. We do not see these tools posted on the extranet at this time. But, we do anticipate publication in the 2021 Survey Activity Guide (SAG).

Lastly, surveyors have been trained on these new tools and encouraged to cover all the materials.  The Joint Commission believes this will streamline the Medical Staff System Tracer.
