Question:
Should we perform eyewash station risk assessments to determine if a plumbed eyewash is needed for irritating, noncorrosive chemicals?
Answer:
Since TJC has relented and stopped scoring the need for an eyewash for irritating chemicals, we would advise not using that risk assessment as the process of deciding need is easier today.
- If using, pouring, mixing a chemical identified as corrosive on the SDS, then you need an eyewash.
- If storing below eye level, a corrosive in a sealed container, but not using, mixing or pouring in this location, you do not need an eyewash.
- The irritants TJC used to score, should no longer be scored if the SDS does not indicate that the chemical is a corrosive.
