Some hospitals require their leadership to take FEMA training but does the Joint Commission require it?
Emergency Management Training
In short, EM.15.01.01 EP 4 says: “The hospital requires that incident command staff participate in education and training specific to their duties and responsibilities in the incident command structure.
Is FEMA Training Required?
“The hospital may choose to develop its own training, or it may require incident command staff to take an incident command-related course(s) such as those offered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).”
So, TJC does not require FEMA courses. It is perfectly acceptable to have organizations develop a course such as “This is how we do HICS at this hospital.”
