What are the compliance guidelines for endoscope processing? The AAMI ST 91 endoscope processing provisions require reusable buttons and valves (accessories), to be tied to specific scopes as a “set.” Are there other options?
Guidelines for Endoscope Processing
Yes, there are alternatives. Section 7.5.2 of the AAMI ST 91 provides three options for detachable parts and accessories. Each option has two goals:
- Prevent the spread of infection
- Track scopes/accessories and patient use
The organizations choice of a preferred method should be implemented only if approved in the manufacturer’s instructions for use.
- To use single use caps and valves
- To sterilize valves and caps, preferably using steam sterilization if authorized by the MIFU
- To always tie valves and caps to the specific scope for tracking of patients and potential infections
